Getting started

What do I need?

An Apple Watch with watchOS 10 or later, paired with an iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Install Love-40 on your iPhone and it appears on your watch automatically (or install it from the App Store on the watch). Love-40 costs £3.99, a one-off purchase that covers both apps.

How do I start a match?

Open Love-40 on your watch and tap Start. Match setup lets you change the sport, format, court and opponents first. Your usual format can be set once in the iPhone app under Defaults, and it syncs to the watch.

Why does the app ask for Health and location access?

Health runs the Tennis workout (heart rate, calories, steps) and saves it to Apple Health. Location is one fix at the start of a match, used to name the venue and look up the weather. Both are optional. See the privacy policy for details.

Scoring

How do I score a point?

Tap YOU or OPP. On Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2 with watchOS 11, Double Tap (pinch your finger and thumb twice) gives you the point.

I gave the point to the wrong side. How do I fix it?

Tap the undo arrow at the top of the score screen. You can undo as many points as you need.

Where are the stats and controls during a match?

Turn the Digital Crown to scroll from the score to Stats and Controls, where you can end the match, swap the server in doubles and more.

How do I log an excuse?

Long-press the opponent's score and pick one: wind, sun, net cord, line call, racket, bad bounce, shoes, injury or partner (and the glass, for padel). Indoors, wind and sun aren't offered.

How do I turn the comments off or change them?

In the iPhone app go to Defaults › Comments, or change it in Match setup on the watch. Choose Off, Normal, Funny, Coach, Excuses or Commentator.

Doubles

How does the serving order work?

At the start of each set the watch asks each team who serves first. The opponents are only asked when both are named. Tap Skip to carry on last set's rotation. If a pick was wrong, use Swap on the controls page.

Health & workout

My heart rate or calories show “--”.

Check that Love-40 has Health access in the iPhone's Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › Love-40, and that the watch is snug on your wrist. Scoring still works without Health.

How are padel matches saved in Health?

Apple Health has no padel workout type, so padel is saved as a Tennis workout, with the sport noted in the workout's details.

iPhone app

The live score isn't showing on my iPhone.

Make sure Defaults › Live › “Live score on phone” is on before the match starts, and that your iPhone is near the watch with Bluetooth on. The setting applies from the next match.

A finished match hasn't appeared on my iPhone.

Open the iPhone app with the watch nearby. Matches are queued on the watch and transferred as soon as the devices can talk to each other.

The venue or weather is missing or wrong.

The venue and weather are looked up when the iPhone is online; matches saved offline are filled in the next time you open the app. You can change the venue, court or surface on any match.

Backup

How do I back up or move my matches to a new iPhone?

The app keeps an automatic backup in the Files app (On My iPhone › Love-40). To move to a new phone, go to Defaults › Backup, export a backup to iCloud Drive, then restore it on the new phone from the same screen. Restoring only adds matches and players that are missing.

Can I get my matches as a spreadsheet?

Yes. Tap the share button at the top of the Matches list to export a CSV with every match, including weather and fitness numbers.
